2002 Cleveland Browns: One Year Wonder

The city of Cleveland, Ohio went without an NFL franchise from 1996 to 1998 because of a decision made by Art Modell to move the original Cleveland Browns to Baltimore, Maryland and become the Ravens. This brief period of time hurt passionate Browns fans and left a void for the game of football as Browns fans temporarily adopted other NFL teams and rooted for them on the side.

Cleveland received its second chance at the NFL in 1999 when the city was awarded an expansion franchise. The new Cleveland Browns got out to a less than stellar start, easily being one of the worst teams in the NFL for its first few seasons. In general the 2000’s proved to be one of the most painful decades in Browns history concerning wins and losses. However, there was one year where Browns fans actually had some hope.

In 2002 the Cleveland Browns went 9-7, finishing 1.5 games behind the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North Division. The Browns went 3-3 in divisional play and 7-5 in conference play. The Browns only went 3-5 at their home of Cleveland Browns Stadium, but they performed very well on the road, going 6-2.

The Browns would turn to 2 quarterbacks in the regular season because of how hot they could get once they clicked with their receivers. Quarterback Tim Couch went 8-6 as a starter, completing 273 of 443 pass attempts for 2,842 yards and 18 touchdowns while throwing 18 interceptions. Quarterback Kelly Holcomb went 1-1 as a starter, completing 64 of 106 pass attempts for 790 yards and 8 touchdowns while throwing 4 interceptions.

The 2002 NFL Draft class for Cleveland was actually pretty solid in terms of immediate production. Running back William Green came from Boston College and was the 16th overall pick by the Browns in the 1st Round of the 2002 Draft. Green had 243 rushing attempts for 887 yards and 6 touchdowns while having 16 receptions for 113 yards. Running back Jamel White had 106 rushing attempts for 470 yards and 3 touchdowns while having 63 receptions for 452 yards.

Wide receiver Quincy Morgan had 56 receptions for 964 yards and 7 touchdowns. Wide receiver Kevin Johnson had 67 receptions for 703 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wide receiver Dennis Northcutt had 38 receptions for 601 yards and 5 touchdowns, and on trick plays Northcutt had 8 rushing attempts for 104 yards and 1 touchdown. With the 47th pick in the 2nd Round of the 2002 Draft the Browns chose wide receiver Andre’ Davis, who would have 37 receptions for 420 yards and 6 touchdowns. Tight end Mark Campbell had 25 receptions for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end Steve Heiden had 17 receptions for 105 yards and 1 touchdown.

Andre’ Davis particularly excelled in the special teams unit as he had 50 kick returns for 1,068 yards and 1 touchdown. Northcutt had 25 punt returns for 367 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The defense for the Cleveland Browns was opportunistic and it appeared that it had solid enough talent to carry the team to winnable situations on the field. Middle linebacker Earl Holmes had 95 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Strong safety Robert Griffith had 62 tackles and 3 interceptions. Defensive back Anthony Henry had 57 tackles, 2 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles. Middle linebacker Brant Boyer had 50 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 interception. Linebacker Dwayne Rudd had 51 tackles and 1 sack. Safety Earl Little had 44 tackles and 4 interceptions. Linebacker Darren Hambrick and cornerback Daylon McCutcheon both had 41 tackles and 1 interception.

Right defensive tackle Orpheus Roye had 0.5 a sack and 2 forced fumbles. Defensive end Kenard Lang had 5.5 sacks and 1 interception which he returned 71 yards. Defensive end Mark Word led the defense with 8 sacks. Defensive end Tyrone Rogers had 3 sacks. Left defensive tackle Gerard Warren had2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Defensive end Courtney Brown had 2 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries. Defensive back Lewis Sanders had 1 sack, 1 interception and 3 fumble recoveries. Linebacker Kevin Bentley was the 101st pick in the 4th Round of the 2002 Draft and he had 2 fumble recoveries. 3 players had at least 1 interception, which included cornerback Corey Fuller, defensive back Michael Jameson, who also had 1 sack, and linebacker Andra Davis, the 141st pick in the 5th Round of the 2002 draft, who also had 1 fumble recovery.

The Browns were at a critical point of the regular season where they had an even record of 7-7, and realistically they had to win out in order to make the playoffs. In Week 16 on December 22 at Ravens Stadium the Browns knocked off the Baltimore Ravens 14-13. Tim Couch completed 22 of 31 passes for 209 yards and 1 touchdown while throwing 1 interception.

Jamel White punched in a 3-yard touchdown run with 7:29 remaining in the 1st quarter. With 0:42 remaining kicker Matt Stover kicked a 31-yard field goal for Baltimore. The Ravens took a 10-7 lead when wide receiver Travis Taylor had a 17-yard touchdown reception with 4:30 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Stover then kicked a 43-yard field goal with 5:03 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Browns successfully executed a game-winning drive with time running out in the 4th quarter. With 0:29 remaining Mark Campbell caught the game-winning 1-yard touchdown reception.

In Week 17 on December 29 at Cleveland Browns Stadium the Browns officially clinched a playoff spot for the first time in their new history as they held on to beat the Atlanta Falcons 24-16. William Green had a great game as he had 27 rushes for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kicker Phil Dawson booted a 40-yard field goal for Cleveland with 8:12 remaining in the 1st quarter. Green had a 21-yard touchdown run with 9:18 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Atlanta started coming back with a 15-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Brian Finneran with 3:42 remaining. Kicker Jay Feely would boot 3 field goals from 42, 49 and 30 yards out in the 3rd quarter. Down 16-10 the Browns came back in the 4th quarter as Kevin Johnson had a 15-yard touchdown reception with 6:58 remaining, and then with 3:53 remaining Green busted out an impressive 64-yard touchdown run.

In the Wild Card Round of the playoffs on January 5 at Heinz Field the Browns had a 17-7 halftime lead against their division rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers, but they were unable to hold on to that lead as they would lose to the Steelers 36-33. Ever since 2002 the Browns would go back to losing football games and being one of the worst teams in the NFL, so by all accounts the Browns were a one year wonder in 2002.
